Mary Pogue, Nurse

BSN, RN

Mary Pogue has been an RN for over 33 years with a varied background.  She graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and has worked in Orthopedics and Neurosurgery at Henrico Doctors Hospital. She was hired at Instructional Visiting Nurses Association (IVNA) as a home care nurse. After she was hired, IVNA started a fledgling hospice program and she was recruited to join the team. This is where she discovered her calling to the role of hospice RN.  She enjoyed working with Bon Secours Hospice 20 plus years in the roles of Triage Coordinator and Clinical Educator Informatics RN.

 As a result of her career she has many clinical skills, but the one she sees as most important in this role is compassion.  Mary believes this work requires practicing the art of compassionate communication, and she hopes to use her years of experience as an RN to support the holistic approach to care in the home.  Mary has four living children and one lost long ago.  That experience draws her to want to help others facing loss in this way. 

Mary shares her home with 3 dogs, 3 very bad cats, and 6 chickens.  When she sees something that intrigues her, she spends months working on perfecting that “project” and then gives it to EVERYONE as gifts over the holidays. Family members have suffered numerous homemade items including soap, candles, plant hangers, Christmas stockings, and many more! One year she made mittens from re-cycled sweaters and fleece purchased from thrift stores.
